François Giard is an artist and image researcher. Trained in art history and holding a PhD, he explores the relationships between image, perception and light.
His research on perception, carried out alongside the neurosciences, led him to a simple question: what becomes of an image when, instead of receiving light, it produces it?
Baroquia is his answer.
From the great Flemish and Dutch flower pieces he keeps one principle — form emerging from darkness — and takes it literally: printed on a translucent medium, the image is lit from within.
By day, the work reads as a composition. At dusk, it becomes a presence.
From wood to light
The artist composes each image from photographs, paintings and references that serve as models for generative tools; the image is then reworked, digitally retouched and recalibrated for light. Each work is printed, assembled by hand and signed in the studio.
